Suze is right. Most people at least use credit cards, but YES - should do so responsibly! Credit card companies need MORE laws holding them in check! American Express is the worst. You (customer) must abide by the "agreement," but they can generally do WHATEVER they want. It is best to avoid them altogether if possible! To idiot '41eilliott' : you must pay what you owe, or you're a BUM.

I LUV you Suze BUT, but. I'm 57 and was raised by parents that survived the first depression. They NEVER used credit cards and pounded into me "IF you DON'T HAVE CASH to buy it, you don't need it or can't afford it". I may not have the ginormous plasma tv in every room in the house along with sorround sound systems, a $300 dollar 'smart phone' (plus contract) or cookware and crystal made in France BUT except for utilities, the only bill I have is an affordable mortgage.

I paid off my Capital One Bondage and Chase Slavery cards and cut them up. I wasted alot of money on interest and fees for things I could have just paid cash for.

But Suze, the universal default policies were a good way for credit card companies to protect their assets. They allowed the credit card companies to share information and know who was being a bad debtor so they could get as much money as possible from someone who was 'robbing Peter to pay Paul', and realistically, those people have a 95% chance of going bankrupt anyway, so the credit card companies were just getting their money, and it's not just their money. It's their share holders' money.

when i was 18 my mom said i needed to get a credit card to establish credit. i didnt want one because id heard all kinds of horror stories about debt, but at the time i had hardly any savings. currently i have 2 cards, and have used them for a couple purchases, like if one day i forgot my debit card i used them but that's it. when i buy things i almost always use cash or my debit card. but even when i was trying to finance a car i still didnt have enough credit.

@blkcolas LOL! Yeah, if you think about it, does anybody really think that the IRS would ever go hassle homeless guys living under a bridge about why they didn't file an income tax return for the last 20 years? Would some junkie in the ghetto with 9 kids from 8 different women get arrested for not paying child support? Of course the answer is no, because if that was the case, the prison population would be 500% higher than it is now. They only go after people who try.
41elliott (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
@blkcolas I live in Michigan, and I can tell you that it is 10%. I own a pizza shop, so they get nothing from me unless I give it to them. But yes, I agree with you, stealth is advisable.
41elliott (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
@blkcolas If you get sued, all that means is that a judge is going to say..."You pay those people". Actually paying them is a different matter. There is no debter's prison, and wages in most states can only be garnished at 10% maximum. American Express sued me for not paying them after they raised my interest rate to 30% FOR NO GOOD REASON..... They get 5 bucks a month from me now....6 if I'm in a goood mood and it's Christmas. I can't have them cutting into my beer and porn budget.
