Complete video at: http://fora.tv/2009/08/04/Shop... Philosopher and mechanic Matthew Crawford defends trade work as more cognitively stimulating than society recognizes. He considers manual labor to be not only more satisfying to human nature than white-collar work, but often more creative and mentally taxing. ----- Crawford left D.C. think-tanks and the Committee on Social Thought to open a motorcycle shop. In this memoir-cum-manifesto, he suggests that knowledge work is ultimately unfulfilling, and recommends manual trades as a more engaging way to both think and do. - Politics and Prose Matthew B. Crawford majored in physics as an undergraduate, then turned to political philosophy (Ph.D. Chicago). His writings for The New Atlantis bring the two concerns together, and consider how developments in the sciences influence our view of the human person. Currently a fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture at the University of Virginia, he also runs a small business in Richmond. He has just completed a book about manual competence, entitled Shop Class as Soulcraft after the New Atlantis essay by the same name. The book reflects on the experience of building things and fixing things, and considers the problem of living concretely in an ever more abstract world. The book was released by The Penguin Press on May 28, 2009.

@Bryandkw are you serious?? I am a carpenter, carpenters rates are typically 25-35 here for a journeyman employee, (not foreman) I work on my own and in good times make more than this. However my trade is one of the lower paying, sparkies, HVAC guys, millwrights make quite decent money. Besides, I love what I do all day, all kinds of things to figure out.

@patnais102 Hey genius, I am a ticketed carpenter.T o achieve journeyman certification you need 5000 hours of on the job training, plus in the class training of six weeks a year for four years. So it is a little more than 2 years. You seem very ignorant to the way the real world works,.

@Bryandkw Is that the situation in the States? I'm assuming you're from the States, forgive me if I'm wrong. Either way, the situation clearly sucks where you're coming from. This is not the case in Canada, at least not Alberta. Mechanics make good money up here, as well as the other trades (I've worked in five different trades and know many other tradesmen). Of course, we lose a significant chunk of money each pay day due to ridiculous taxes, but I sure don't struggle financially.

Unless you're lucky enough to get into a union don't expect to make anything more than minimum wage working in skilled trades.

His book is very interesting and I believe compliments rather well, if somewhat surprisingly on the face of it, a book by Iain McGilchrist - The Master And His Emissary.

@blunted333 You'll never be the same! It's a wonderful read, and after you've read it, read it again. It's amazing! You'll be able to draw lots of comparisons.

You need psychological help if you can't stand opinions contrary to your. The facts are giving me reason so keep living in your fantasy , waste of flesh ( yes you are a waste , human acting like animals do not deserve to live).Anger management ? I'm angry because I'm stating my opinion even if what I think goes against conventional wisdom?I don't want help if it is to become a docile dog like you.
