August 2005 China's controversial one child policy has stemmed population growth but at what cost? From forced abortions to heavy fines, many have suffered. "If people tried to have a second child and didn't have any money, they'd have their house pulled down," complains Liu Shuling. She attracted the wrath of local officials and was heavily fined when she became pregnant a second time. "It was very hard," she recalls. "Fortunately, we didn't starve to death." For the past twenty-five years, controlling population growth has been a major priority for the Chinese government. "Unless there is a containment of population, there will be no economic growth, no social stability or social harmony," explains official Siri Tellier. But there's real concern that this policy has created a generation of spoilt children. "They are very delicate. They can't cope with setbacks," states teacher Sun Kaiyun. Demographic growth may have been stemmed but new population problems have been created. The preference for boys has led to millions of female foetuses being aborted. Now, tens of millions of Chinese men face a future with no prospect of a female partner. And that could create the social unrest the one child policy was supposed to avoid. humans are just ignoring this FACT and they forget why they were born and then die. the worst part of life is dying at old age. u become helpless and weak and u cant take care of urself, thats why u need ur kids. mybe 3 or four kids. because one kid cannot help u. one child cannot help 3 adults or 4 by himself.

you cant even safe urself from death how u goin safe this planet.ur kids, cousins, friends,ur mother, father, aunt and uncles will die someday. the little kids that u see playin out side the park will die some day. noone will live for eveer, no one on this planet or any planet will live for ever or stay young and healthy for ever. everything has its time. rich or poor all going to die. generation after generation.

@streethustla24 What I'm saying is the parents rights to have a child should not come before the rights of people in the future to survive. With more people in lets say 2030, there'll be less money per person since there's more people to share all the money & for many people, maybe 1000s that money they can have thanks to the one child policy will be the difference between life & death. The Chinese government are very oppresive often, I'm usually against their policies, except for this one.

@deanmullen10 what logic are u talkin bout? u wanna control the population? then why dont u and ur family commit sucide and anybody els that wants population control first.

i dont blaim the goverment of china. i blaim the people for not standing up for their human rights being abused.

Although this law seems like a violation of the parents rights, you have to think about it logically: 1. In 30 years from now, there'll be millions of less people then there would have been w/o this policy. 2. With millions less, there's more money per person 3. For some poorer people that little extra amount of money could be the difference between life & death
